Our Cares Committee is focused on supporting the needs of members of our community who are not as fortunate as most of us. We have chosen to do this primarily by working with three shelter partners – Urban Peak, The Delores Project, and Step Denver. We have also occasionally worked on projects separate from these shelters.
There have been articles about the three shelters in this newsletter previously, but in brief – each works to provide full wraparound services so that their clients can become safe, happy, productive members of our community. They each deal with different client populations in different ways, which is a big part of why UpDoNA chose to support these particular shelters. Urban Peak supports Denver youth, up to age 24. The Delores Project is focused on women and transgender clients. Step Denver focuses on adult men with alcohol and other drug dependence.
Volunteer work is the backbone of our support for Urban Peak and The Delores Project. There is a broad range of volunteer needs at both programs, and we can help you find a niche that feels right for you. Most commonly, volunteers help with preparing and/or serving meals. Step Denver primarily uses volunteers for special projects – last year we painted an outdoor structure. We need more volunteers to be able to better address the needs of our shelter partners. You can help regularly or just once – anything is appreciated by the shelter clients we work with.
Not surprisingly, all three shelters need financial support and UpDoNA members can also help with direct donations of money or by participating in fundraising events.
